If you’re taking omeprazole, there’s a few things GoodRx pharmacists think you should know. And it’s available over the counter (OTC) or with a prescription. Omeprazole is available as a brand-name and generic medication. You might have GERD if you have signs of acid reflux (including heartburn) more than two times per week. Heartburn can be mild, but if it happens often it can be a sign of GERD. Acid reflux is when stomach acid flows backwards into your esophagus (a tube that connects your mouth to your stomach). These are not all the side effects of omeprazole. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you are concerned. It’s also important to speak to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms which can be signs of stomach cancer: PPIs, like most medicines, have side effects so it's best to take them for the shortest time possible. But studies involving more people need to be done to be sure that PPIs and H2 blockers cause stomach cancer, rather than something else causing it. It also suggested that it could be more likely in people taking them for longer than 3 years. There is some research to suggest that taking medicines to reduce stomach acid, like PPIs and H2 blockers, may slightly increase the chance of developing stomach cancer.
